About Mozilla Hubs

Mozilla is a non-profit Foundation.  So you are using amazing tools that are not driven by profit.

Hubs is basically a VR chatroom designed for every headset and browser, but it is also an open source project that explores how communication in mixed reality can come to life.   We often refer to this as a 3D / Virtual Reality space.  The full 3D/VR effects are best experienced using a VR headset, but the experience on a reasonable desktop computer is still very immersive and engaging.

There is no special software you need to download.  All Hub spaces can be accessed via a standard browser.

To start, you ideally need:
  • a reasonable computer and/or VR headset
  • if on a computer, we recommend you have a good working mouse and keyboard
  • headphones (but not essential)
  • working microphone (via your computer, headphones or headset)
  • up to date browser, e.g. Edge, Firefox, Opera or Chrome (if you use Safari, it should work)
  • reliable broadband internet connection.
As a minimum, you should be able to see this spinning cube:

Built for Every Device
You can use your desktop or mobile phone if you don’t have access to any VR hardware. For kids, even a Chromebook computer works well and sometimes even better than lower specification computers.  Everyone can come together and communicate with each other in this online social space. The experience will progressively scale to make use of the hardware that is available to you. Hubs supports every single Mixed Reality headset. Every. Single. One. You can enjoy this experience with advanced hardware such as an Oculus Rift or an HTC Vive, or you can use alternatives such as a Daydream or cardboard viewer.

Privacy
Mozilla Hubs has been built with privacy as an important feature.

Safety
Unfortunately we are unable to monitor all of the 30+ spaces we've built.

If you encounter someone or a group that you do not wish to interact with, then you can completely block that individual or group. Simply click on the people button in the top right of your screen (see image below).  It will provide a list of all the people in the room.  Select the users you wish to block, then select HIDE and you will not see, hear or receive messages from that individual.

If we are in the room, please look for the user with the initials after their name "TCL", short for 'theme camp lead'.  We can boot that person from the space if the matter is serious.  We cannot necessarily prevent them from reappearing in the space as another Avatar.  You can report issues via email to us (see email address at bottom of the page).  We will do our best to keep everyone safe!

Note for parents/guardians of young people:  Please monitor and help your young people stay safe on the internet.  Know where they are and who they are engaging with.  We've had a 10 year-old safely using these spaces for a while and they love it.  They have not encountered issues, but we always stay alert and regularly remind them about safety and advising us if they encounter issues.

Navigating and using Hubs

A full list of user controls is available here:

Here are two great tutorial videos on entering and moving about with a Mozilla Hubs room:

Training Room

Here is a simple Mozilla Hubs space that you can test entering and moving about in.  It is just a basic space to get familiar with before entering our specially built worlds:

Avatars

You can easily enter the room without any complex Avatar creation.  You can simply accept the default Avatar to get going and change it anytime later (including your name).

Mozilla Hubs has an increasing range of Avatars to choose from.  It should be quite intuitive, but the tutorial videos above provides guidance on basic Avatar changes.  However, if you want to customize further, here are a few options ranging from simple to more complex.

Ready Player Me
This avatar creator uses your own photo and then you can customize.  The file product is a url link that can be pasted into Hubs in the Avatar menu.  The tool provides information on how to load.

Quilt
Quilt allows you to customize the "skin".  The skin is simply a square pattern that when loaded into Hubs wraps over the robot avatar shape.  You can use images or color the skin in the app online or color the skin in another application and save as a PNG image file.

Fully customized Avatar
If you are skilled in using 3D modelling tools, you can create almost any Avatar you like!

Teleporting

Throughout our Hub Spaces we have embedded links of two types:
  1. Move to another Hubs space, or
  2. Open an external link.
Our newer spaces have blue circles above the portal links.  Either way, we usually have a sign and then a preview of the link.  Hover your mouse over the preview and click to enter.

You will also usually find the portals near the porta potty.

If you get lost, you can simply copy and paste another link directly in your browser.
